  • How to Build a Digital Twin: Full Design Fidelity Visualization & Aggregation of 3D Data

    • Brian Harrison, Director, Software Product Management, NVIDIA

Start learning how to build a digital twin in NVIDIA Omniverse. Building a digital twin is a complex process and there are multiple ways to get started. In this session, we walk through a generalized example of one of the most common challenges in large scale design and digital twin projects—being able to aggregate disparate 3D datasets (i.e., CAD, design, animation, or simulation) from many software ecosystems, and visualize them in full-design-fidelity with no data loss or model decimation. Learn how NVIDIA Omniverse’s connected and collaborative Universal Scene Description-based workflows can help unite and unlock your data, and see examples of Omniverse Connectors and understand what questions to ask to determine which are best for your workflow. Be sure to check out "How to Build a Digital Twin: Bringing in Robotics" as a follow-up session.

The Conference for the Era of AI and the Metaverse

Developer Conference March 20-23 | Keynote March 21

Don't miss these three upcoming Omniverse Enterprise sessions at GTC.

Getting Started on Running Omniverse in the Cloud

NVIDIA Omniverse Enterprise is a very powerful 3D simulation and collaboration platform, but it requires powerful GPUs and compute. If you’re just getting started, you might not have all the physical resources that you need. A great way to get started, and then grow your hardware investment over time, is to start out in the AWS cloud. We'll walk you through the steps to set up your own, fully functional, Omniverse Enterprise environment in your own AWS cloud. We'll include step-by-step guidance on setting up a Nucleus Server virtual machine (VM), a couple workstation VMs with Omniverse Launcher, basic guidance on sizing requirements, and making everything communicate with each other, for a totally self-contained 3D simulation and collaboration platform in the cloud.

How General Motors Explores Future Automated Workflows Using a Single ‘Live’ USD Dataset with Omniverse

Current GM workflows use digital data exported from many different digital content creation programs (Autodesk Alias, Siemens NX, JT, Blender, Maya, and Rhino/Grasshopper) into different file formats. The exported files are “dead” data with no history or ability to be easily updated. This “dead” data is then imported into various visualization and simulation softwares that are individually prepped and optimized based on their final use case. When changes come down the line, the process is to manually remove old data and add the new data. We'll look at what the future could be using a single “live” dataset with Universal Scene Description (USD) throughout the entire workflow. We'll walk through our testing of Alias, JT, and Teamcenter in USD format with different Live Link setups. After this session you'll walk away with a better understanding of the issues and challenges in the automotive design process and how USD and Omniverse could improve future workflows.

Building a Digital Twin of the German Rail Network to Deliver Next-Generation Railway Systems

Designing and implementing a large-scale digital twin that's comprised of thousands of kilometers of railway tracks, manifold infrastructure elements, and their direct neighborhood can be challenging. We'll show how we're tackling this challenge step-by-step, starting from exporting the HD map data we acquired from measurement drives to Omniverse down to the perception tasks inside the digital twin environment. In the end, we generate highly accurate synthetic data from Omniverse for arbitrary scenarios that are close to the ones gathered from real-world train operations, such as our Sensors4Rail project. We'll focus on specific challenges that arose when implementing train physics, such as train derailment or speed adjustment, as well as those we faced when implementing digital humans capable of autonomously walking on a train station.
